( Romantic Anime Tropes Meme )

Anime has some unique tropes when it comes to romance, perhaps because of the setting or the culture in which the medium comes out of. However, these days, some of these conventions have become familiar and prominent - both in anime focusing on romance AND in the more general fare. This meme is for playing out those in all their wonderful, strange, romantic, touching, or sometimes over-the-top and cheesy elements.

By no means is this meme only for anime characters or for characters in Japanese setting. Everything here is generalized enough to apply to just about anything. I would love to see any sort of character here, because come on. No matter what you play, you have to love some romance.

Repaying a Debt: You broke a vase, ruined somebody's priceless something-or-another, and now you have to be their servant until you pay it off!
I'll Be Your Dog: Or you don't owe that person anything, you just wait on them hand and foot and hope they'll appreciate you one day.
The Kind of ____ You Like: You want to change yourself to the type that the object of your desire wants.
One-Sided Love: Sadly, still a trope here. As always, a heart will be broken. But maybe, just maybe, the love isn't unrequited. Maybe the other person isn't aware!
Jerk/Sweetheart: The pairing of a stoic jackass and a manic pixie dream.
Misunderstood Delinquent: You're not what you seem. You just want to give flowers to that cute girl, not run her over with your motorcycle!
Fight for You: I won't lose the hand of my girl/guy to the likes of you!
Sudden Kiss: Kiss from nowhere! There are lots of reasons for this: to stop someone from crying, to make them be quiet, or just to explain yourself when words can't.
Kiss on the Forehead: It's a sweet way to say "I love you."
Physical Difference: Usually size difference - and then, it's usually big guy/tiny girl, though big girl/tiny guy is explored as well - though this is present in a lot of different ways.
Class Difference: Again, sometimes common in western fiction, but anime is made in a culture that is still greatly stratified by class, whether it be wealth or power structures.
Oh, My Goddess!: Uh-oh, you accidentally summoned an angel/demon/alien/god/goddess. And now they're bound to you forever! But at least you can stay just friends...or something like that.
Teach Me To Become Human: A robot, an alien, a god, a demon, or anything beyond our human knowledge wants to know more about our emotions - from you and your love.
Single-Gender School: For all the yaoi and yuri fans out there, don your uniforms and remember that Maria is watching.
The Silent Protector: In love with his/her charge, but never able to act on it.
The Perfect Waifu/Husbando: They are so graceful, so lovely, so kind, you've really lucked out!
To Make My Beloved Happy: You will do anything for the person you love, even if that means not being with them.

[ sounds good! poor mary tho summoning a blood thirsty god with a snake sacrifice im laughing. ]

[ there's a loud LOUD crashing in the house that mary lives in and it stirs up enough debris to cause a dust storm. when it clears, there is a dark haired teenager perched on one of the fallen chairs over mary's table. he seems amused enough at his predicament, but the slight brow quirk at the other's appearance indicates that he's not amused enough to let her pass without some sort of affirmation. ]

( as soon as the sound reaches her ears, mary curls up, and the dust makes her cough and hack pitifully, even after it clears. it takes her a while to recover.

when she sees the new person in the room, however... )

[ the snake god's eyes narrow into yellow slits as he analyzes the girl standing in front of her. weak. she is nothing but weak- but he can feel the bloodline of the snake resonating in her veins, however weakly. it must not be an accident that he was summoned here of all places, then. even though that may be the reason, it doesn't dismiss the annoyance on his face when he glances at his surroundings.

this is nothing compared to even his bedroom in the other realm.

kuroha groans. ]

I-- Uhm-- I just--

( she's shaking all over, and she can't seem to form a sentence. sorry, kuroha, you might need to calm her down! )

[ being ripped from his paradise of slaughter and bloodshed to a peaceful little place like this- the snake god almost feels insulted that the one who summoned him is someone who can't even manage to stand straight. he scans her arms for the command seals, and when he locates it, it elicits another groan. he's not happy about this at all.

kuroha shifts his position, leaning into one of his palms.

if this was his master, then he really didn't have a choice, did he? out in such an open space like this, it wasn't likely that he'd find a master in the two-week period allocated to him, not did he have the prana to maintain his presence any longer. ]

( she straightens herself out, still shaking- even her voice is shaky! )

A...Archer? ( she sounds a bit confused, thinks it over. it doesn't sound right at all. and...she wants to honor her dead friend...

she wished she didn't have to do this, but...azami left no room for debate. literally. )

[ he pauses for a couple of seconds before pulling at the fabric that hems his stomach, investigating the clothes that whoever mary was referring to was wearing before his apparent death. ]

[ he removes his hands from against the wall, and instead settles them around mary's throat. her glowing eyes are interesting, but hardly anything to bat an eye at. instead, he's squeezing, tighter and tighter until she can only catch a sliver of breath whenever she inhales. ]

Ar-cher. Can you say that for me, Mary?

( she grabs at his arm and tries to pull him away- let go let go let go!! )

Ku... ( she can't even finish her sentence, but it's obvious she won't back down. )

[ his hands squeeze around her throat tighter in response. if she's not giving up, then neither is he. besides! it's more fun when you struggle. he won't kill you just yet.

he is, unfortunately, unaware of the glowing command seal on her wrist. no one would be stupid enough to use it on something like this, right? besides, he's trying to save you, in a psychotic, roundabout way. ]

( she tries to intensify the power of her "eyes", but she can't. she's only half medusa. actually, not even half. and this is one of the only times it frustrates her.

[ the glow from her hand is more than enough to indicate what's actually happening here. he drops her immediately, letting her slump to the floor while he reels back, clutching his head in pain. ]

[ he's removing his hand from his head now that the headache has subsided. [

Why would you waste a command seal on something as insignificant as a name?

( she just sits there for a few moments, catching her breath. Her hands gently rub her neck to try and ease the pain. )

C...Command seal...? ( she's not even conscious of what she did. )

[ kuroha hisses, kneading his temples. the angrier he gets, the more he feels the pain coming back. he glares into mary's face. how could she? how could she!? something as precious as that! ]

Look at your arm. There should be two markings there, right? Show them to me.

( she looks at her arms and cautiously holds the one with the seals out to him. )

[ sure enough, there's only. at least she's supplying him with enough prana to materialize himself- or perhaps that's the bonus of this body. after all, this girl before him doesn't seem like she knows anything to begin with. this is utterly frustrating. ]

Do you know about the Holy Grail War?

[ he takes her hand gently within his own. he could cut it off right now, and then she'd never have to worry about being a master again- but where would he find another master to graft this arm on to? plus, he doesn't have that kind of power to begin with. ]
